Description: 1949 Willits Bros Canoe, Day Island Tacoma Washington 17’ cedar All Wood . A spectacular canoe in excellent original condition with some blemishes noted, no breaks or major hits. These canoes were meticulously put together by two brothers in limited production, roughly 1000 of them made. From the previous owner, Update: This is from the owner: My mother received it newly made as a gift from a family friend when she was a teenager in 1948/49; she was an avid boater, having grown up on Lake Oconomowoc in Wisconsin. She went to Smith College, then became a secretary at MIT where she met my father, who taught aeronautical engineering. He did his undergrad and PhD at MIT, then taught there until age 72. My father was afraid of the water, so mother really never got to use the canoe in Massachusetts, it was on display in the basement and she would proudly show it, but no one in the family wanted to go canoeing with her until I did, once, in high school we took it to the Concord River. Even though she bought a house on Lake Winnipesaukee that same year, she did not have a boat house to store it, and at that point treasured it more as a collector's item, so it remained in the basement all these years. Kind of sad for such a beautiful boat, but I'm glad to hear there is a good level of interest! Could also be an excellent candidate for display in your home restaurant lodge bar cabin or retail store is.
