It occurred to her that she wasn't embarrassed in the least. She remem- bered the first time she went to a hotel with a man. How shakingly, burningly self-conscious she had been. She had worn a red dress-and she had felt like a large scarlet letter looming up before the quiet-voiced people who walked past her. She knew just what Jeff was writing in the register. Mr. and Mrs. Kendall Reed. Funny, the names men use at a hotel for an illicit love affair. Jeff, for instance used Kendall Reed, the name of his wife's lover. And Jeff, being the sort of per- son he was, probably got more satisfaction out of that than if he socked Kendall Reed one in the jaw. Oh well, some day, somehow, he would get his divorce and they would be Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Taylor Drake. Joseph- what a name! She remembered the day she met him. She had said, "I refuse to call you Joseph, and I will not call you Joe, so it will have to be Jeff." She thought, "You're always so cute, Jennie. Always think- ing of trick names to call people.
