Truman" Political Button from the Presidential Election of 1948. The only time Harry Truman ran for the Presidency. Truman and Alben Barkley ran against the Republicans Thomas Dewey and Earl Warren, the ex-Governor of California who later became “Chief Justice” of the Supreme Court. Senator Strom Thurmond ran as a "Dixiecrat" and ex-Vice President, Henry Wallace, ran as a "Progressive". They also ran campaigns and served to split the Democratic Party three ways. Every prediction, with or without polls, had Dewey as the winner because of the split, however.... "Give em Hell" Harry, who had the original sign on his desk that said "The Buck Stops Here", had become President when Franklin D. Roosevelt died in office during World War II. "I was in the Senate Office building and I got a call to go to the White House to see the President. When I got there, I found out I was the President!" In 1948 he ran for his own term of office. In one of the most famous errors ever, the "Chicago Daily News" printed the paper shown the next day, by the real winner. Oops!! Once, during a speech, a supporter yelled out "Give 'em Hell, Harry!". Truman replied, "I don't give them Hell. I just tell the truth about them and they think it's Hell." Subsequently, "Give 'em Hell, Harry!" became a lifetime slogan for Truman supporters.
