Description: I am selling an extremely rare and seldom seen 1946 USPS storage box. Also called a relay box and was used in cities by mail carriers to store mail along their walking routes. This box has a beautiful patina. Box is solid. There is no lock for the door. This mailbox was made in 1946 by Van Dorn Ironworks. This piece is quite collectible and would be a great conversation starter! Please note: The box has been decommissioned with two clean torch cuts through US MAIL . One of the legs has some slight tap marks on the inside where a dent was popped out. This box came from a prominent estate of a 39 year Durham NC engineer for IBM and was originally obtained from a state surplus auction. Local pickup is encouraged. Box is located in Burlington, NC. Buyer to cover actual shipping charges, we are willing to package and drop off as needed. Measures 49.75” tall, 20.25” wide, and 21.5” deep.
