Rush (left) split the water today (July 8) at United States Steels Federal shipyard in Port Newark, New Jersey, shortly before the 12,700 ton cargo ship Almeria Lykes (right) was launched at Federal's yard in Kearny, New Jersey. The cargo ship, christened by 11- year-old Almeria Lykes Thompson, of Houston, Texas, was named for the founder of Lykes Brothers Steamship Company, the great-grandmother of the sponsor. The destroyer, 87th built by federal, was christened by Mrs. Dorothy Flagg Biddle, Radnor, Pennsylvania, cousin of the naval hero for which it was named. Photo measures 9 x 7.25 inches.
