Tolmie at entrance to Victoria Harbor, BC Victoria, B.C. - "There lies the end of a dream," said an old waterfront man this week as he viewed the stranded remains of the barkentine Simon F. Tolmie, resting on a pinnacle of rock at the entrance of Victoria Harbor. The Simon F. Tolmie had just unloaded a consignment of spruce logs from the Queen Charlotte Islands when a howling southeaster swept over Victoria. Her mooring lines at Ogden Point broke and she was carried by wind and wave across the harbor entrance and piled up. The underwriters considered her a total loss and she was sold to the Island Tug & Barge Company, which will make efforts to salvage her and use her in their hog-fuel business. The Simon F. Tolmie was the only one of four barkentines whose keels were laid here not long after the First World War ended, to be launched and enter the deep-sea trade. Victoria had enjoyed a boom in wooden-ship construction during the war and when the period of high wages and when the period of high wages came to a sudden halt, there was a clamoring among all classes for some scheme which would revive the industry.
