Description: RARE FIRST EDITION OF CIVIL WAR NOVEL PUBLISHED IN 1942, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR! The title of the book is, Land of Fadeless Stars and the author is Edwin Arnold - not to be mistaken with Sir Edwin Arnold who produced a well-known poetic rendering of the sacred Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita. The publisher of the book is identified as Alpha Law Brief Company on the title page but no date on the title page, a copyright date of 1942 to Edwin Arnold behind the title page, but no further information on publication on this copyright page or the title page. The earliest printed version of this book in Worldcat lists a date of 1942 and the Alpha Law Brief Company as the publisher, so I must assume therefore that this is the FIRST EDITION OF THIS BOOK. A 1943 version of the book on Worldcat lists the publisher as, Press of Pillow Bros. Editions in Worldcat dated 1947 and 1948 provide the publisher as, Pillow Bros. & Fulshear. Finally, the only other copy on Worldcat is a 1962 publication of the 13-page poem that is also part of this listing; this booklet does not have a publisher identified. The thing that makes me uncertain that this is really a 1942 publication, rather than a more modern facsimile, is that the book is in EXCELLENT CONDITION. Clean blue cloth boards, clear gilt letters on front board and spine, little to no board edge or corner wear, very solidly bound, red-speckled page edges, 627 clean and solidly bound pages, no interior marks other than inscription, followed by a 3-page bibliography. There is some light age-toning around page edges in the first few and last few pages, not otherwise. The booklet was published in 1962, and it notes, "7th Printing". It also is in EXCELLENT CONDITION, with no wear to covers, no further interior marks in 13 pages. BOTH THE BOOK AND THE 13-PAGE BOOKLET ARE SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR EDWIN ARNOLD TO THE SAME INDIVIDUAL. The date of the signature in the booklet is 1964, and the date in the book is 1974. See listing photos for inscription and signature. Here is an overview of this CIVIL WAR NOVEL provided in, Bibliography of the ChickasawBook by Anne Kelley Hoyt: "This is a novel of the Civil War. Wanina, pure, beautiful, part Cherokee and part Chickasaw, falls in love with a Confederate officer from the western Cherokee. He receives a head wound at Chickamauga and loses his memory. After many difficulties he is found and submits to some miraculous surgery which restores his memory and good looks. He and Wanina decide to stay in her old old home in the Smokies. Although published in the 1940's, the florid style and stereotyped characterizations seem more characteristic of the 19th rather than the 20th century. Other than Wanina's supposed ancestry and some references to the "Mighty Hunter of the Chickasaws" smiling down from the heavens, there is little pertaining to the Chickasaws in the book." This is a brief bio found on the author. This was found in an "interview" from the Houston Public Library Digital Archives which is the only place that lists his birth and death years, 1881 - 1984: "When he was born in 1881, his father planned to make him a butcher, but Edwin Arnold decided to work in insurance and on the railroad before becoming a well-respected lawyer in Houston. A man of many talents, Arnold also wrote a historical novel, Land of Fadeless Stars, during the Depression." Cliff's Books B57
