In this work, the French painter and writer shares his appreciation of Early Netherlandish painting, and the Northern Baroque of the Old Masters of Belgium and Holland. Fromentin was one of the first art critics to approach Old Masters such as Rubens and Rembrandt from a personal point of view, exploring the artists emotions at the time of creating their masterpieces, as well as situating the paintings in their social, political, and economic context. CONDITION Rebound in a brown quarter calf binding over patterned boards. Externally, very smart. Lightly rubbed to the spine. The rear hinge is just beginning to start. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are rather age-toned but clean throughout.
