Lee Pressman, Michael Russell & Philip Murray of CIO, DC CIO official testifies before monopoly committee - Washington, D.C. -- Philip Murray, chairman of the CIO's steel workers organizing committee today told the national monopoly committee that dismissal pay of at least $500 per man, and a reduction in the maximum work week to 30 hours, would ease the problem of displacement of men by machines. In the course of his testimony, Murray produced Michael Russell, center, 48, former hand-roller in the Carnegie Mill at Newcastle, PA., as an example of skilled worker replaced by technology. Russell told the committee that he had been laid off, after 20 years as a roller, when the Newcastle plant shut down in 1937. The mill at Newcastle, he added, was replaced by an automatic strip mill near Pittsburgh and has never reopened. Left to right Lee Pressman, general counsel of the CIO, Michael Russell, and Philip Murray (Washington, D.C.) Photo measures 8.5 x 6.75 inches. Photo Is dated 1940.
