Description: 1939 MERCEDES BENZ TRIPOLIS GRAND PRIX FORMULA AUTO RACING POSTER INDY CAR ART You are looking at a reproduction poster/print of the 1939 Tripolis Grand Prix Auto Race sponsored by Mercedes-Benz. A Mercedes Racing car is featured. In a great yellow and blue design,Mercedes-Benz announces (in German of course) the debut of its new 1.5 Liter race car in 1939 Grand Prix of Tripoli, Libya (then an Italian Colony). Driving for the Mercedes Team are Hermann Lang and the Italian Rudolf Caracciola, who drove to victory for Mercedes-Benz in the 1936 Monaco Grand Prix. The car is described as "a unique achievement of the Daimler-Benz company" and the two drivers "victorious through devoted work and great effort." If this sounds heavy-handedly propagandistic, well, in 1939, a German-Italian collaboration did have a certain significance. Besides his steady work for Daimler-Benz, the Austrian born Hans Liska did various publications and for the 4711 cologne manufacturer in Cologne. Rudolf Caracciola's parents emigrated to Germany, where the famous Mercedes driver was born & raised, becoming a Mercedes salesman and then race driver. He did get permission from Mercedes to race Alfas in 1932/33 when Mercedes didn't field a team. His victory in the 1931 Mille Miglia in a Mercedes is always referred to as the first (and aside from Moss in 1955, only) victory by a non-Italian in that classic road race. What a fantastic poster!
