1937 Alabama Vs George Washington Football Double Exposure Type 1 Press Photo

Description: Of the 1200 photos we acquired from this lot, this was our very favorite! What a rare atmospheric shot! Condition is excellent for its age. See photos. Washington, D.C., Oct. 26—Have you ever seen two ball carriers on the loose at the same time in a game? No, neither had we until we saw this photographic double exposure made during the game between Alabama and George Washington last Saturday in the Capital. Kilgrow (left), Alabama left halfback, and Nowaskey, George Washington right halfback, are shown carrying the ball in the game won by the Crimson Tide, 19 to 0. 10/26/37 This photograph is an example of an accidental double exposure, a common occurrence in the early days of sports photography. The image captures an unusual moment from a college football game between Alabama and George Washington University, where both teams appear to be carrying the ball simultaneously due to the overlay of two shots. This anomaly provides a rare and humorous look at the challenges faced by photographers using film cameras in fast-paced sports environments. === This 7x8.5” original type 1 photograph is from the personal collection of photographer Wes Howland (1906-1956). Howland was a reporter with the Harris-Ewing news service in Washington D.C from 1931-1941, and went on to serve with the military. He was one of a small number of photographers with complete access to the White House, Capitol, Senate, and House. This photo was part of a collection of over 1200 8x10” Wes Howland personal archive images that we acquired from his estate. Included with the lot was the following note from a relative: “Periodically he would send his 8x10 glossy’s to his mother. Soon after (joining the Marines) the newspaper of Harris & Ewing went out of business. As far as I know, the hundreds of pictures he took and sent his mother are one of a kind, and the only ones in existence. No prints have ever been made. I inherited them from my grandmother.” Not only did Mr Howland have incredible access to the government figures of the day but he was a highly skilled photographer who produced some stunning historical images and documented Washington D.C. in the 1930s like few others.
