All hinges in tight condition, save for the front hinge on Volume IV, which is slightly desiccated. Wear to leather on boards and spine, with some flaking and rubbing. Slight wear to tops and bottoms of spines, especially the tops of Volumes II and IV. Bookbinder label from Murugan Binding in Madras, India on the pastedown of the front board of each volume, as well as a bookseller logo from Arthur Probsthian in London. Title pages have stampings from Professor Johannes Rahder at Yale University. Occasional slight rips and tears to pages. Slight wear and staining to edges of pages. Infrequent marginalia throughout. Pages are perfectly readable with minimal toning. Please see photos. A unique, early collection of the Tamil Language, which is spoken by over 75 million people in Southern India and Sri Lanka. Each volume came in multiple parts that were subsequently bound together. The previous owner, Johannes Rahder (1898-1988), was a Dutch-born professor who documented and studied a wide variety of East Asian languages. Can be an excellent reading copy if rebound.
