It pitted the Republican Governor of Kansas, Alf Landon, and Publisher Frank Knox against the incumbent President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Vice President John Nance Garner of Texas, who were finishing their first term in office. Roosevelt had initiated the "New Deal" and put millions of folks back to work. The "Great Depression" was still strong but beginning to weaken and the Republican Landon wanted to return to the policies of the Hoover administration. This resulted in the most lopsided presidential election in the history of the United States. Roosevelt won every state but Maine and Vermont. Weight: 0.71 Gram, 15 Millimeters, Metal. Obverse: LANDON • GOP (on Elephant) • KNOX Despite running against him, in 1940 President Roosevelt made Frank Knox his "Secretary of the Navy" and Knox was personally mentioned by Hitler in his declaration of war.
