Two original vintage photograph albums. Each in string bound buff card wraps, with gilt lettering and logos to upper covers. One album containing approx. 120 gelatin silver photographs, inc. large portrait of the Strathaird [21cm x15.3cm] followed by approx. 108 gelatin silver photographs [11.7cm x 8.2cm], each corner mounted, and approx. 12 loose photos [9.1cm x 6.5cm]. Very Good to Good condition. Bindings with some edge-wear and one with splitting to spine. Light creasing and marking to covers. String has been re-strung to one spine, meaning the leaves in the album are loose on the upper side but attached on the lower side. Photographs either tipped into corner mounts (can be removed), or laid down to pages in the case of the large ship portraits and the tiny contact prints. Photos generally well-preserved, with some mainly light scattered fading and / or age-toning in places. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images closely. The Australian ports and cities shown in the photos include Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne. About 50 of the larger photos show scenes and people in Fiji, including a Fijian adonis flexing his muscles.RMS Strathaird, later TSS Strathaird, was an ocean liner of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O).She was the second of five sister ships in what came to be called the "Strath" class. All previous P&O steamships had black-painted hulls and funnels but Strathaird and her sisters were painted with white hulls and buff funnels, which earned them the nickname "The Beautiful White Sisters" or just "The White Sisters". Strathaird and her sister ship RMS Strathnaver were Royal Mail Ships that worked P&O's regular liner route between Tilbury in Essex, England and Brisbane in Queensland, Australia. In 1935, they were joined by the third ship of the class, RMS Strathmore.Strathaird remained in service for almost 30 years, being scrapped in 1961.
