It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us. A scanner may interpret colors and contrast differently than human eyes will, so it is possible that the actual photograph may be slightly darker or lighter in person. Notables at Lincoln's Tomb - Legion Commander Pleads for Americanism - Springfield, Illinois - General view at the majestic tomb of Abraham Lincoln, in Springfield, on the 126th anniversary of his birth, when notables of state and nation gathered to do homage to the memory of the great emancipator. Voicing that homage were Frank N. Belgrano, Jr., national commander of the American Legion and Mrs. A.C. Carlson, national commander of the Women's Auxiliary, as well as others prominent in the nation's affairs. Before a throng of veterans of three wars and others, commander Belgrano made his now famous speech in which he charged Russia with responsibility for the spread of communism in the United States and demanded that recognition of the Soviet, granted a year ago, be withdrawn immediately. Shown in the picture are four persons in center foreground - Governor Henry Horner, of Illinois - Frank N. Belgrano, Jr., national commander of the American Legion, Mrs. A.C. Carlson, national President of the Legion Auxiliary, and Mayor John W. Capps, of Springfield. Sent Bureaus and Hearst Papers...Photo measures 8.75 x 6.5inches. Photo is dated 02-13-1935.
