Robert Abial “Red” Rolfe (October 17, 1908 - July 8, 1969) played third base for the New York Yankees’ “Bronx Bombers” led by Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Lefty Gomez and Red Ruffing. From 1936-1939, the Yankees captured the American League pennants and World Series titles, winning 16 games and losing only 3 during that span. He was a member of two more pennant winner in 1941-1942 capturing the 1941 World Series over Brooklyn, but losing the 1942 Fall Classic to the Cardinals. Rolfe batted above the .300-mark four times in his ten year career with the Yankees (1931, 1934-1942) enjoying his greatest success in 1939 when he led the AL in hits (213), runs scored (139) and doubles. From 1935-1941, Rolfe topped the 100 hit mark in each of his seasons as a regular. Red Rolfe retired after 10 years posting a .289 career batting with 1,394 hits including 257 doubles, 942 runs, 69 home runs and 497 RBI. After retiring from everyday playing, Red became the head baseball coach at Yale. Rolfe managed four seasons with the Detroit Tigers compiling a 278-256 record in 539 games and nearly upset the New York Yankees in 1950 for the American League pennant.
