Description: Note: Please study the images carefully to determine the condition of this vintage photograph, as it may not be in perfect condition. It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us. A scanner may interpret colors and contrast differently than human eyes will, so it is possible that the actual photograph may be slightly darker or lighter in person. Flowers - miscellaneous. Plants that eat raw meat - others that don't - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania . . . This curious collection of four different plants is to be found in the University of Pennsylvania Botanical Gardens, where James Lambert (upper left), superintendent, makes a close study of their strange habits. The plant he is examining is known as the Borneo pitcher plant. It not only traps insects in its mottled pitcher-shaped bloom but actually dissolves and consumes them! The floral starfish (upper right) is known as the Stepelia hirsuta. It's "gamey" odor attracts insects for pollenization. The beautiful floral sunburst (lower left) comes from Brazil and is known as the passion flower because of the resemblance of its stigma to three nails of the cross, two for hands and one for feet. The five anthers symbolize five wounds, according to the Biblical legend, and the rays of the corona are the rays of glory of the crown of thorns. Ten parts of the perianth represents the apostles with the exception of Peter, who denied, and Judas, who betrayed the saviour. The strane bloom in the lower right corner resembles a pelican in more ways than one. It preys upon insects and makes them do the work of pollenization for it, after having attracted them by its peculiar scent.Photo measures 10 x 8inches. Photo is dated 07-22-1932.
