Description: 1930's Era Koch's ALE - Red Crown - Fred Koch Brewery - Dunkirk, NY This is a very tough to find Ale crown from the Fred Koch Brewery of Dunkirk, NY. The crowns with the word ale were only used in the 1930-40s. After that the brewery used Red crowns for beer and green crowns for ale. Not many of these early ale crowns survived. In the 1980's Koch's was absorbed by a larger (Genesee) brewery ending a brewing tradition that Dunkirk, NY enjoyed for over 100 years! Koch's was one of the thousands of small community brewers that dotted the landscape and then disappeared in the face of competition from the major breweries. Today these little companies would be called micro-breweries and they would be experiencing a resurgence. Since the brewery closed memorabilia has continued to become harder to find.
