Description: Title: 193. Nouvelle Tour du Louvre et la mairie The series:This auction is for a stereoview from the “(vues de Paris)” series, which presents images of Paris as it then was in the late 1850s and early 1860s. There are roughly two hundred numbered views in the series, including some with the same style of mount and label but lacking the (vues de Paris) title. The artist:There is nothing printed on any of these by an artist claiming authorship of these works. A small number from this series represent imperial residences, and a small number of those are clearly from the same negatives as views published by Florent Grau. Grau used as a marque the initials “G. A. F.”, which were his initials in reverse order. I bring this up to suggest that some, perhaps all, of the works in this series are by Grau. Feel free to contact me with evidence for or against this attribution. Many of these have a rubber-stamp on the reverse for A. Hautecoeur, but he was a print and photograph dealer, not a photographer. The History:Between 1858 and 1863 architect Théodore Ballu designed and built the Belltower of the Church of Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois, sometimes called the New Tower of the Louvre, since it stands opposite the east façade of the Louvre. From 1857 to 1859 architect J.-I. Hittorf had built a new mairie (city hall) for what was then the 4th arrondissement of Paris. It was designed to mirror Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois, next door. The main purpose of Ballu’s tower was to serve as a visual link between the two buildings. It did not actually function as a bell tower. The church already had one; but it is a short square tower, barely visible from the street.By the time the tower was completed Paris had expanded by annexing surrounding suburbs, pretty much to its current size. Politically it grew from 12 to 20 arrondissements, which were redrawn into the current plan by which they spiral out from the center. Hittorf’s building is now the mairie of the 1st arrondissement.
