Airplane travel over the Atlantic Ocean via the North Atlantic Airway will come to a reality if the plans and proposal of the Armstrong Seadrome Development Company of Wilmington, Delaware, can be carried out. Passengers, freight and mail will be carried in gigantic amphibian planes that will make stops and landings at various points in the Atlantic Ocean, where the seadromes numbering a 1/2-dozen or so, will be anchored. Local amphibian planes would travel at an average speed of 115-mph and Express planes would travel at a speed of 150-mph. 70 30-passenger airplanes of the trans-Atlantic amphibian type, recommended for ocean airways are planned to be used. The seadromes will be built of iron so as to resist corrosive action of the ocean water and are so designed as to minimize danger from storms of any intensity. They will be anchored about 800 miles apart. The seadromes will be 200-400-feet wide and 1,200-ft. long so as to permit the landing and taking off of planes. The displacement of the seadrome will be 50,000-tons, 1/2 being ballast. Below the landing deck will a service deck free from obstruction of any kind. 4 hangers will be located adjacent to the service deck. Hotel accommodations will be provided for 125 personnel and an equal number for transient guests. There will also be radio equipment for broadcasting and meteorological equipment. Photo shows model seadrome which was built under the supervision of the inventor Edward Armstrong which is expected to make trans-Atlantic travel practical. The model is being tested out in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland. Date Stamped Oct. 22, 1929.
