These certificates represented a direct claim to a specific amount of gold, allowing holders to redeem them for gold coinage. Originally used primarily by banks and large businesses for high-value transactions, they became a trusted medium of exchange during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Gold Certificates were issued in denominations of $10, $20, $50, $100, $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000. The 1928 Series Woods/Mellon Gold Certificates featuring the signatures of Treasury Secretary Andrew W. Mellon and Treasurer Harley V. Woods were the last to be issued. Their production continued until 1933 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration suspended the gold standard and made it illegal for private citizens to own most forms of gold. This marked the end of public circulation of Gold Certificates, although they remained legal tender. This commemorative 24k gold note is a stunning replica of the 1928 Series $50 Gold Certificate. Minted from 100mg of .999 fine gold, the design pays tribute to the 18th President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant. On the obverse, the replica showcases the original $50 Gold Certificate design, featuring a central portrait of Grant. Inscriptions include "SERIES OF 1928", "100 MG 24K GOLD", “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “FIFTY DOLLARS” and a statement that reads, "THIS CERTIFICATE IS NOT A LEGAL TENDER…" above the treasury seal. The reverse depicts the U.S. Capitol building surrounded by the inscriptions “THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIFTY DOLLARS” along with the number “50” appearing in each corner. This commemorative 1928 $50 Gold Certificate has been certified 70 Gem Unc by PMG! Shipping All orders ship via USPS First Class mail. All orders over $250 will be shipped with signature required.
