A scarce, first English edition of the Japanese play Ii Tairo, first performed in 1920. The play centers on Ii Nasouke, a Tairo in the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan who was assassinated in 1860 by opponents of his position on the opening of Japan to foreign trade. A very nice copy that was once housed in the library of the Japanese liner S.S. Wakasa Maru, which transported passengers to ports from Japan to London to Brazil between 1913-1930.
