Description: The item listed is an unusual pendant or key fob with a 1927 vintage Indian-head/Buffalo nickel mounted in its metal. An extension at the top has a hole which may have been threaded with a necklace or key ring (we suspect the latter). Original features of the Indian and the buffalo are easily seen although details are partly worn. The coin is said to be of a copper-nickle alloy; the mounting may be similar as it has both silvery and copper casts where rubbing has occurred, or there may be more silver. No mint letter appears. The Indian-head side gives the coin's date as 1927. Below the date is the letter F, which is said to represent the coin's designer, James Earl Fraser. This side also bears the word "Liberty" on the coin. On the head side the mounting has cross-hatches; the reverse lacks them. The buffalo, or reverse, side has text of "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURBIS UNIM", and "FIVE CENTS". An internet search reveals that the Indian Head Nickel circulated from 1913 to 1938, with 47 million being struck in the year of this coin, 1927, and while this abundances reduces its rarity it also makes this vintage more a part of American history. The Indian portrayed is said to have been inspired by several American Indian subjects whereas the buffalo is modeled after an American bison named "Black Diamond" that lived in New York City's Central Park Zoo. The coin has been in the seller's possession for decades, stored; it may have once been a grandfather's prized memento. Ships free to US addresses only.
