Description: THE NEW NEGRO, An Interpretation edited by Alain Locke The famous anthology of poetry, fiction, and essays, often considered the definitive text of the Harlem Renaissance. Besides Locke the authors include Langston Hughes, Jean Toomer, Rudolph Fisher, Zora Neale Hurston, Countee Cullen, James Weldon Johnson, W.E.B. DuBois, etc. The text is illustrated by German artist Winold Reiss with additional art by Aaron Douglas and Miguel Covarrubias. The book was first published in 1925. This copy is from the far scarcer "second printing" of 1927. This should actually be considered the second edition, due to additional material: five more illustrations by Aaron Douglas; a portrait by Walter von Rucksterschell; a significantly expanded bibliography; and a poem by Helene Johnson (possibly her first book appearance). The book lacks the scarce jacket but remains in pretty good shape. The covers show some fading as well as general wear, mostly at the edges, including a couple short tears at the spine top; there is a water stain at the spine bottom which does not affect the text. The binding is still sound. Discoloration to two pages from a laid-in newspaper article (a 1927 obituary of cabaret singer/comedienne Florence Mills). The text is otherwise very nice, few signs of use. An average or slightly better copy of an extremely rare and historically significant volume. Measures 6" X 8.75", xviii + 452 pages plus a number of color illustration plates. Ships promptly & securely.
