Established in 1862, it has grown both by construction and by acquisition; its system now includes such railroads as the Southern Pacific, Western Pacific, Missouri Pacific, Rio Grande, Chicago & North Western, and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas. Its system stretches from Chicago and New Orleans in the east to Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle in the west. Prior to these expansions in the 1980s and 1990s, the UP was still one of the dominant western carriers. During the heyday of rail passenger transportation, it actively promoted tourist travel with travel packages to its various destinations. It had a number of famous "named" passenger trains, to include the City of Los Angeles, City of San Francisco, Overland Flyer, Pony Express, and the Portland Rose. This booklet measures appx 10x7 inches closed, 14x10 inches opened, and contains 48 numbered pages. The cover is a mid-weight cardstock, and the content pages are semi-glossy paperstock. The Rocky Mountain map measures appx 24x24 inches and is printed on flimsy paperstock. The brochure is in good condition, with no writing or markings; the center pages have come off the staple binding, but all else is intact. The foldout map is torn mid-map from the back page onto which it was affixed, but all of the map is present. Images sell!
