"Greed" is the notorious masterpiece of silent film-making by one of the most demanding of Hollywood's early directors, Erich Von Stroheim, who was nicknamed "the man you love to hate." Originally seven hours long, the film was cut by the studio to less than two hours, much to Von Stroheim's chagrin. "Greed" is an intense and obsessively realistic drama of avarice and human degradation, adapted by Von Stroheim for the screen from Frank Norris's naturalistic novel "McTeague." Filmed in San Francisco, the California mountains and Death Valley, it is a strange story of a dentist and his miserly wife whose greed for gold eventually drives him to desperation - and to the murder of his former best friend.
