Description: Steam Traction Engines, by Frank D. Graham, reprinted by Nation Builder Books, Leesburg, VA, 2001, 5½ x 8 paperback booklet, 41 pages. This is a new photoduplication of the chapter on steam farm tractors from the 1922 edition of the Audels Engineers and Mechanics Guide No. 2. As is usual with all Audel's material, this chapter is richly illustrated, with 77 excellent drawings and photographs of various traction engine components. Sections include: The Engine; Characteristic Reverse Gears; Boiler; Friction Clutch; The Transmission and Differential Gearing; Steering Gears; Feed Pumps and Heaters; and How to Operate a Traction Engine. The first illustration is a line drawing overhead view of the Eclipse engine, followed by a Reeves two cylinder engine, the combination balanced valve of a Port Huron four cylinder compound engine; the balanced piston valve from a Geiser; Intercepting valve of the Reeves engine; and the Rumely double cylinder engine. Then there are line drawings of shifting eccentric reverse gears from Best Mfg. Co., Russel, Geiser, and Marsh. Then, the Marshall radial valve gear as applied to the Reeves engine; the Case geared feed pump; and radial reverse gears from a New Huber and a Port Huron. There is a poor quality photograph of a Huber traction engine, followed by two drawings of the Nichols & Shepard engine. In the section on Boilers, there is a cut-away illustration of the Huber straw burning boiler; a Rumely link motion reverse, and three drawings providing more details of Rumely components. Also illustrated is a Huber boiler with superheater; a Geiser locomotive type boiler; rear end construction of a Rumely; flue and stay construction of a Rumely; and a nice detailed drawing of a Geiser boiler spring mounting. In the section on Friction Clutches, there are drawings of a Wood friction clutch, plus a Wood transmission, differential, and cushion device; a Harrison six shoe friction clutch; a Norwest friction clutch; the differential gear construction of a Port Huron; and a rather unclear illustration of a Case spring mounting transmission gearing. The accompanying picture (scanned from the reprint, not from the original) shows a side view of a Rumely, and details of a Geiser steering gear. There is also a Huber friction steering gear; and an Avery independent steam steering gear. The next section includes drawings of Huber cross head pump; Northwest fly wheel boiler feed pump; a poor quality depiction of a Case feed water heater; a Huber feed water heater; a Huber exhaust valve; and a Huber throttling governor. Next is a very nice sectional view of a Baker uniflow cylinder with steam actuated compression control valve; followed by a rear view of an Advance-Rumely rear mounted engine bed. There is a nice side plan of an Avery direct flue, locomotive type boiler; and Rumely concaves and concave adjusting device. Please note this is a new photoduplicated reproduction, not an original.
