Internet research: Biography from the American Architects and Buildings database Born in Philadelphia to Frank Rush and Margaret (Custer) Whiteside, G. Morris Whiteside would become best known as a Wilmington, DE, architect. After graduating from Central High School, he received a Certificate of Proficiency from the University of Pennsylvania in 1905 and then enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1905 to 1906. After winning a medal in the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, he journeyed to the American Academy in Rome to study in 1907. His office experience was gained in Philadelphia with architects William C. Hays and Cope & Stewardson. By 1910 he had established Brown & Whiteside in Delaware; and this successful firm was followed by G. Morris Whiteside, 2nd, 1931 to 1955, and Whiteside, Moeckel & Carbonell, organized in 1956. Whiteside was extremely active in public service. He served as secretary of the Wilmington Zoning Commission (1930-1946), chairman of the Mayor's City Planning Commission (1935), president of the Delaware State Housing Commission (1930-1932), president of the Delaware Board of Architectural Registration (1935-1937), and twice president of the Delaware Chapter, AIA.
