The Grand Cross was the highest class of the Iron Cross and was founded in 1813 and renewed in 1870 and 1914. This is the 1914 version of the award, instituted as a result of the outbreak of WW1, and was awarded only 5 times to men such as the Kaiser and generals Hindenburg and Ludendorff.
