Description: COPTIC APOCRYPHAIN THE DIALECT OF UPPER EGYPT Edited by E. A. Wallis Budge Published in 1913 by the British Museum FIRST EDITION Very rare - I have found no other copies of the first edition available for sale anywhere online. An important collection of apocryphal texts providing valuable insights into the ways in which Christianity was practiced in Egypt, where the Coptic tradition developed distinct rituals, liturgical practices, and theological interpretations. Some of the texts in the collection contain mystical and esoteric teachings, offering rare insight into early Christian mysticism, Gnosticism, and spiritual practices.Originally composed in the Coptic language, specifically the Sahidic dialect of Upper Egypt - and all being published for the first time in this volume. To the student of Egyptian Christianity they are highly significant, for they record traditions and legends that were hitherto unknown. The texts were also of great value linguistically, as they contain many unusual forms, and some words which were not found in the lexicons available to Wallis Budge at the time. Sir Ernest Alfred Wallis Budge (1857-1934) was an English Egyptologist, Orientalist, and philologist. He joined the British Museum as an assistant in 1883, and where he eventually became Keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities from 1894-1924. Budge acquired a large number of antiquities and manuscripts during the course of his collecting activities in Egypt and Mesopotamia, returning with collections of cuneiform tablets; Coptic, Syriac, and Greek manuscripts, and significant collections of hieroglyphic papyri. Perhaps the most famous acquisitions from his time at the British Museum were the Amarna Letters, a copy of Aristotle's lost Constitution of Athens, and the Papyrus of Ani, considered to be the finest extant example of the Egyptian Book of the Dead. The book will be well wrapped and boxed and sent by recorded delivery. It's a heavy book, hence the slightly higher than usual postage cost. International postage costs by Royal Mail tracked: Europe - £25.00USA & Asia - £30.00Australia - £31.00*if the post office charges less than the figure quoted I will refund the difference I've also listed some other books, including 'Epirus' by N.G.L Hammond, which may be of interest.
