Above, the incomparable dancer Nijinsky in the title role of the Ballet Russe's 1912 production, "Afternoon of a Faun." The costume was created by Leon Bakst, the decorative genius of the early 20th century, and the subject of Charles Spencer's six-color study, "Leon Bakst" (St. Martin's Press, March 6, 1974, $40). The artist's sensuous and exotic designs for the Ballet Russe caused enormous controversy, revolutionizing modern theater decoration, design and fashion. Today Bakst, who knew and worked with Chagall, Cocteau, Diaghilev, D'Annunzio, and other masters, is regarded as the most innovative stage designer of this century. Although highly esteemed during his lifetime by both fashionable society and the art world, Bakst was an insecure and often mysterious man whose frequent bouts of mental and physical depression hastened his premature death at 58 in Paris in 1924. Spencer's book details Bakst's stormy life and features over 250 examples of the artist's work, many in full cover. Photo measures 8 x 10inches. Photo is dated --1912.
