Description: PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS Designed For Use As A Textbook Of General Physics Written by William Francis Magie. Published by The Century Company, New York. Copyright 1911; first edition—the copyright and title page dates match. This book is signed and dated by scientist, educator and Mormon apostle Joseph F. Merrill on the front pastedown. Merrill was the first native Utahn to earn a Ph. D. He was a key figure in developing the church education system. The book has a library label on the front cover, but there are no other signs of being in a library: labels, stamps, etc.. “Union Square Educational Department” is in pencil at the base of the title page. Union Square is an area in south Salt Lake County. I don’t know if the book was given to a school in this area or if it was once in the lab at Granite High School. From Wikipedia: Joseph Francis Merrill (August 24, 1868 – February 3, 1952) was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from 1931 until his death. Merrill was a key figure in the development of the Church Educational System in the early twentieth century. He served as the sixth Commissioner of Church Education from 1928 to 1933. Prior to his service as commissioner, he played a significant role in the creation of the "released time" LDS Church seminary system. His tenure as commissioner saw the creation of the Institutes of Religion and the transfer of nearly all the remaining church schools to control of the states they resided in. He also faced a crisis in 1930 and 1931 which threatened to end the released time seminary, but the LDS Church education system survived the Great Depression under his leadership. In 1931, while still serving as commissioner, Merill was called to serve in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. In 1911 (when Merrill signed this book) Merrill was married with six children. The same year he was called to serve as president of the Granite Utah Stake and opened the first LDS seminary at Granite High School. From Deseret News: ”One night Merrill observed as his wife held the children spellbound with stories from the scriptures. Later he asked her where she learned to teach like that? She replied that she learned from her teacher at the Salt Lake Academy, another future apostle named James E. Talmage. Remembering how he distanced himself from religion in college, Merrill formulated an idea to create a system where a person can attend a secular school and still have an opportunity to study the scriptures. As a member of the church’s Granite Utah Stake at the time, Merrill suggested building a seminary next to the high school, similar to something he had seen while visiting the University of Chicago. The stake president authorized the use of $2,500 to construct the first seminary building, which was designed like a bungalow house so it could be sold if things didn’t work out, Griffiths said. Thomas Yates, an engineer at the Murray power plant, was recruited to be the first seminary teacher of a class in 1912 that included future BYU president Howard S. McDonald and Mildred Bennion Eyring, the mother of President Henry B. Eyring, second counselor in the church’s current First Presidency.
