Description: Twenty-Third Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology to the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution 1901-1902 The Zuni Indians: Their Mythology, Esoteric Fraternities, and Ceremonies by Matilda Coxe Stevenson, J. W. Powell, Director, Washington: Government Printing Office, 1904 First edition, quarto, xlv, 634 pp. including 34 text figures and 139 plates (including many color lithographs). In original olive boards with gilt spine and front cover decoration. An essential reference work for the Zuni historian or enthusiast containing Stevenson’s massive study on the lives, habits, customs and religion of the Zuni Indians, profusely illustrated with photographs, drawings and beautifully rendered color plates of religious masks, head-dresses, gods, fraternities, and related objects. Although she published other research on the Zuni and other Native American tribes, this paper comprises her most important written work. Condition: Complete with all plates. Boards are soiled with light wear to edges; spine gilt faded but still readable. Binding is tight and sound, a scarce quality for such a large and heavy old book. Text and plates are generally quite clean with only a little marginal foxing or spotting noted for accuracy. Perhaps a page or two has some minor marginal pencil marks.
