Additional Information Taken in 1903, this photograph of a native hut in Puerto Rico illustrates the significant transformation that was underway on the island in the early twentieth century; this publication by the Detroit Publishing Company remains an enduring image of daily life in Puerto Rico in the years following the conclusion of the Spanish-American War. Following the armistice signed between the United States and Spain in 1898, the Spanish colony was officially ceded to America and became an American Territory that remains an important center for military operations, trade, and tourism. During this transitional period, Puerto Rico remained largely agrarian though the industrial revolution was quickly advancing and transforming the island with the introduction of modern technology. The indigenous population of the Caribbean, the Taino, was first encountered by Christopher Columbus on his initial voyage to the Americas in 1492. Puerto Rico came under Spanish Colonial rule in the early eighteenth century and would emerge as a central hub for trade between the Americas, Caribbean, and Europe that remains active to this day. The island's capital, San Juan, remains a culturally valuable and vibrant city that draws visitors from across the globe attracted to the town's rich history and distinctive heritage and architecture. The minimal aesthetic and distinctive black-and-white tone of this photograph creates a unique bond between the past and present and immediately transports the viewer back in time. This is an authentic piece of historical photography that illustrates the evolution and development in Puerto Rico during the early twentieth century.
