(Smelling salts were ammonium carbonate some of the more expensive ones were mixed with perfume.) the corsets worn by the elegant EDWARDIAN Ladies were so tight that they often needed smelling salts to revive them from an unintentional fainting spell. Fainting WAS a way of showing your suitor that you were the delicate woman that he should shower his affection upon but you couldn’t continuously be passing out! So, smelling salts might be hung on a chatelaine or hidden in a small, flat bottle that fit into a woman’s glove. (Smelling salts were ammonium carbonate mixed with perfume.)A Little More History , “chatelaine” here’s a description. Note that the Chatelaine dates as far back as the mid 1700’s and could be fancy, made of gold and even have diamonds! Or it could be utilitarian and made of a metal called “pinchbeck”. It had chains with hooks that secured the things that the wearer needed during the day. Items like keys, thimbles, scissors and watches would be on the household staff’s chatelaine while the fancier items like this bottle would be on the mistress’s. Remember, there were not many pockets in the gowns of the Edwardian Victorian Era.Just like the chatelaine itself could be made of silver or a lesser metal, so could the bottles that hung from it.
