Description: Charming Naïve Georgian Hand-Sewn Silkwork Picture A country scene dating to the late 18th century depicting a meandering riverscape with picturesque arched bridge, cottages, trees and even a distant church tower complete with weather-vane. There are two gentlemen in the foreground - one reading, the other fishing. The woman depicted is, of course, the one doing the work - filling a pail of water! Very finely embroidered in naturalistic multi-coloured silk threads on very fine silk satin.A charming naïve composition, though executed by a very accomplished embroiderer.A virtuoso display with a wonderful variety of stitches, textures and details. It would have taken many hours to complete, good eyesight and much patience. Some water staining and faint foxing to the silk satin ground of the sky.Although the water stains contrive to look like clouds, so not too disfiguring. Otherwise in good order with few broken threads visible and no fading or tears in the backing silk Presented in an attractive parcel-gilt and burr walnut-veneered frame, with bright gold slip. The embroidery has been re-glazed with low-reflective museum glass which filters U.V. and should mitigate any light damage. A fine addition to any collection. The photographs constitute part of the description. Approximates Sizes: 32cm (12.5") x 24.5cm (9.5") Always very carefully packed.
