Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE All original Crèche with an incredible expressive face looking upward (she would have been made to be placed so that she was looking up in adoration at The Lord figure in the crib). Made of polychrome painted terracotta, with brown glass set eyes; the lower arms and legs are also terracotta and the middle section is hemp wrapped wire body. Circa 1760, origin Naples Italy. This little crèche measures about 9” in height. She is wearing her original metallic dress trimmed in gold metallic, this fabric would have been very expensive to acquire as it is made of genuine metal content. The dress was tied on and the back is open as the creche would have only been displayed from the front in the Nativity. Amazing to me that she even retains her gossamer like original metallic netting for her head covering, She is in acceptable condition considering her age and rarity. Her left hand does not have any fingers remaining, also there is a bit of paint loss on her face and minimal general age wear. I did not remove her costume but I have hand wiped her off with a tad of liquid soap and slight water just to get the dust off so she is without any odors. These figures should not to be cleaned or ever immersed in water, only gently wiped off very carefully as they are old and delicate. Her outfit of silver and gold indicate that she was possibly a saint, or another very important figure that attended the Nativity of Lord Jesus; an exceptionally beautiful artistic interpretation of a saint, or angel, for the crib scene of the crèches. She is a very rare, handmade art sculpture that is coveted by museums and collectors.The early works like this one do not come up for sale very often. Circa mid-1700s, Italian in origin.
