Description: Now rare single issue of the New York weekly Literature: An International Gazette of Criticism for 17 March 1899. A very good complete copy. This now almost impossible to find journal was published in New York (there was also a different English edited issue) during 1899. It expired before the end of the year due to the near financial collapse of the Harper & Brothers book firm. Edited by John Kendrick Bangs. I've never seen another copy. Outstanding content here includes: Veteran Harper's editor and contributor William Dean Howells opens this issue with an essay on the life and works of the celebrated Canadian poet Archibald Lampman, "The Passing of a [Young] Poet," with some generous excerpts from his works. Lampman had died a month earlier. A full page & 1/2 +. Author of a variety of memorable and sometimes controversial literary works, the 36-year-old Welsh writer Arthur Machen contributes an essay headed "Among My Books." On his reading in Thackeray, Dickens, Poe, Hawthorne and Thomas Hardy. This is an essay (full page & 1/2) of some interest. The 20-year-old English poet Wilfred Wilson Gibson contributes a new poem (a full column) headed The Monk. This would seem to be one of his earliest appearances in print. An unsigned "Foreign Letter" headed "Walachia: The Vlachs of Macedonia and their Folklore." A full page and 1/2. ETC. See photo for more.
