Description: 1899 HAWKEYE INS. POLICY RENEWAL WRITTEN AS PROMISSORY NOTE TAXED 2c - UNPAID! On January 26, 1899 the Hawkeye Insurance Company, Des Moines, IA issues a $10 promissory note to F. P. Bond to be paid April 1, 1899. The note was for the renewal premium on casualty insurance policy 344480.Seems to have been a slick way to reduce the tax required on this policy renewal as promissory notes were only taxed 2c/$100 in value whereas insurance policy renewals were taxed 1/2c/$1.00 of premium paid. A $10 premium would have required 5c, not 2c. Moot point as the note appears never to have been paid. It bears a handwritten endorsement: "In Judgt(Judgment) April 18, 1901" signed by a company VP. The back contains notes re interest accumulation and the handstamp endorsement "Comm's Deferred" So it appears the soliciting agent, Sid Hawley, never received anything for his efforts to secure this policy. Odd items like this are the ones companies save in their files and they certainly are interesting collectibles. As a side note the Hawkeye Insurance Co. Headquarters built in 1869 in Des Moines still stands and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1886. Shipping via USPS First Class Mail in the US is $1.00; $3.00 elsewhere. I combine postage charges so either wait for, or request an invoice before paying for multiple lot purchases. Payment please within 2 days of purchase or receipt of invoice. Have questions, just ask!
