Description: Original handwritten and signed envelope sent by surgeon Joseph Lister (1827-1912) to Charles Priestwood Lucas at the Colonial Office, dated March 25th 1898. An original manuscript envelope, addressed and signed by surgeon Joseph Lister. Postmarked 'London / Mr 25 98'. Envelope with black mourtining border and with Lister's printed initial / coronet on rear. Size:12cm x 9.5cm. Some frqying to paper along top edge of envelope where opened. Joseph Lister (1827-1912), was British surgeon, whose work introduced the antiseptic system into modern surgery, and who developed a commercial serum therapy against diptheria. Sir Charles Prestwood Lucas (1853-1931) was a British civil servant and historian, who became head of the Dominion Department at the Colonial Office.
