Woodgate for exemplary performance on his Cambridge University arithmetic examination at his prestigious private prep school, Framlingham College. Light brown full calf leather with gilt motif paneling and centered Farmlingham College logo and motto. Five raised spine bands, compartments ornately tooled with gilt decoration and a gilt-lettered morocco leather spine label (in compartment two). Gilt ruled. All edges marbled with matching marble endpapers. Gilded inner dentelles on turn-ins. Bindery signed on verso of front endpaper. Octavo, 8” x 5.5”, 495 pages. Beautifully illustrated with nine photogravure plates and numerous woodcuts and chapter head and tail pieces . Condition: VERY GOOD The book is solidly bound with a square spine, firm hinges and joints and tight pages. ***NOTE: Light scent of smoke if one takes a big whiff of the pages). *** Rubbing to leather boards and extremities. Corners bumped. Sun-darkened spine. Foxing throughout - moderate overall: heavy foxing first and last quartiles of book, particularly on the endpapers as plates, per usual. Quite clean less the foxing. No writing, very light signs of handling. Gift presentation bookplate on front pastedown.
