Description: FIVE piece letter, postcard and ORNATE envelope set from an Evansville, Indiana drug store in 1896 about cigars. Letter was sent to Indianapolis Indiana tobacconist and cigar maker Andrew Steffen whose warehouse was on the Historic National Road in that city. Steffen was famous for making a cigar known as "Tish I Mingo". The envelope has a George Washington two cent stamp and is addressed to Mr Steffen at his factory at 220 East Washington St. in Indianapolis. The ornate envelope is 6" wide by 3 1/2" tall with a return address of: "Price Drug Co." (name "Grear Brothers" crossed out) New Drug Store Cor. Fourth and Chestnut Streets Evansville, Indiana" and has a lengthy advertisement for "Merchant's Gargling Oil Liniment" from Lockport, New York. The 6" wide by 9 1/2" long letterhead has the same banner as the envelope and is dated January 22, 1896. The 3-paged letter reads: "Mr. A. Steffen Indianapolis Ind. Dear sir, we find some trouble in making a leader of the cigar on account of new flavor, but I hate a flavored cigar myself, as I suppose a great deal – I like the Tish I Mingo myself and would like to push it in a small way to keep a cigar not sold in other drugstores if we can control it, but, as I wrote you. I have had very good success selling handmade cigars which cost us $30 and get them by the box on terms to suit ourselves as there is quite a little competition in the city. Mr. Steele who was with Dr. Nash of your city says – you allowed them the rate 1500 for $50 not requiring one to buy 1500 at one time – which I suppose is just the same where a firm would try and push the cigar – if I understand your terms to be this way you can ship us 900 more time to make our 1500 –. – Half C. 1/2 C. M. – My idea was to get out of store and make some salary as Mr. Steele could run store besides my health is not good at indoor work. That was the reason I wrote you as I wanted to try the cigar line in connection with other lines, but from what you write I judge you do not care to have any one solicit for you – unless they could sell the cigar for enough over to make their commission. – I have about decided that unless you could allow enough to pay me to sell others in town that it would be best to keep them to try and draw our way to store by having something others do not have – would be pleased to have you do all you can in the way of matches and advertising – respectfully yours, Price drug Co. per P." The letter has a small newspaper ad for the Tish I Mingo cigar attached to the front page with the note "we put this in Journal news" at top. And set comes with an additional postcard from same to same dated January 25, 1896 with the message: "dear Sir, please ship 12 box… If you ship do so at once + oblige, respectfully Price drug Co."-A great vintage set ready for display- Could be a real sleeper item fun to research. How many of these throwaway items survived? Great, historic one-of-a-kind item. This is an ORIGINAL item, NOT A REPRODUCTION item! We send all items via US Postal Service. The U.S.Postal service rates change fairly regularly every year and we don't make money on postage like some other ebay sellers. I think you'll find that we're quite fair. Thank-you! Terms of Sale I try and place a penny in every photo to help judge the size of the item, obviously it is there for size comparison and is not included with the item. The standard sized Lincoln head penny in the photograph is there for size comparison ONLY and is not included in the package. We're just trying to help you figure out how big the item is. We try and always be as accurate as we can in the item description and will gladly answer any question about item size & description when needed. Please e-mail us with any questions BEFORE the end of sale and BEFORE placing a bid. Postage is determined by the U.S. Postal service and is never refundable. Many of the items are VINTAGE and although they are in very fine condition, they may not function as well as when they were made decades ago. So if you intend on using the old item, please be aware that we are selling it for collector value only. In other words, if you intend on using a 50+ year old letter opener and it breaks, don't get mad at us. It may be hard to believe, but we have received a couple negatives because people broke vintage items while trying to use them.
