With ten maps, including five folding maps and one in a sleeve to the rear, collated and complete. In 1836, at a time when exhaustive planning was emerging as an ideal in the British Tourist Industry, London-based publisher John Murray began to produce travel guide books for destinations across Europe, Asia, and Northern Africa. Alongside fourteen routes that allow readers to see the most of these counties, this very scarce travel guide also offers a summary of each region's history, general character, and interesting geological features. Prior owner's ink inscription to the verso of the front endpaper, 'the Bishop of St. Albans'. With publisher's adverts to the front and rear paste downs an endpapers. With four pages of publisher's adverts between the title page and the preface. With a sixty page catalogue of advertisements for railways, steamboat companies, and hotels to the rear. CONDITION In the publisher's original red cloth binding. Externally, smart. Very lightly rubbed to the boards, with a little more rubbing at the joints and the spine. The spine is a little bumped to the head and the tail. The front and rear hinges are starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound, with bright and clean pages.
