These two volumes detail the life, travel and work of Thomas Arnold, an English educator and historian who introduced several reforms that were widely used by other public schools. Headmaster of Rugby School from 1828-1841, Arnold redefined standards of masculinity and achievement and based his teaching on the classical languages.Written by one of his former students, Arthur Penrhyn Stanley, this biography was originally published two years after Arnold's death. The volumes explores his early life and time at Rugby alongside an array of correspondence in the form of letters. CONDITION In full morocco binding with decorative gilt dentelles. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to the extremities. Light marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with light spotting to the first and last few leaves.
