Description: (First edition set of 6 maps of a portion of eastern Massachusetts comprising the entire City of Boston and parts of the surrounding metropolitan area in portions of Middlesex, Suffolk, and Norfolk counties – map pages 58/59, 62/63, 66/67, 70/71, 74/75 and 78/79) (with) City of Malden (pages 82/83), and City of Quincy (pages 98/99) from “Atlas of Massachusetts Compiled under the Direction of O. W. Walker, C. E.” by Geo. H. Walker & Co., Boston, Mass, 1891 A complete set of eight large, attractively conceived and executed printed color lithograph maps from the first edition rolled version of Walker’s Atlas of Massachusetts (version with binder holes in the blank left margin and no centerfold). Six maps form the Boston Metropolitan District (individually titled “Part of the Metropolitan District”) and 2 show the adjoining cities of Malden and Quincy. The relationships of these maps to one another are shown by page number and page boundaries (in red) on the Index Map of the metropolitan area shown on page 58/59. Blank reverses. Map sizes: 20 x 28 1/2 inches (sheet). Scale: shown by bar, 1200 feet per inch (metro district maps); 700 feet per inch (City of Malden map); and 1000 feet per inch (City of Quincy map). Shows county and city boundaries and names; roads; railroads; railroad stations; post offices; building locations of public interest (churches, schools and cemeteries); water bodies; and, where applicable, islands; harbors; lighthouses; life-saving stations; and other important local features, all as they existed in 1891. Cities and towns include: All of Boston and parts of Cambridge, Waltham, Belmont, Watertown, Somerville, Medford, Newton, Brookline, Milton, Hyde Park, Chelsea, Everett, Malden and Quincy, plus many wards and neighborhoods (please see photos for more information). Walker’s 1891 Atlas of Massachusetts appeared at about the same time as the Topographic Atlas of Massachusetts issued by the U. S. Geological Survey and State of Massachusetts but differs in both scale and presentation. While the USGS atlas emphasized detailed topography in the now-familiar quadrangle map format, Walker’s atlas appears to have been conceived with the land traveler in mind, emphasizing clarity and ease of use by illustrating travel routes and related information in uncluttered detail. For this reason and due to size, Walker’s maps have proven popular with collectors and make impressive display pieces that are certain to generate interest and spark conversation. Condition: Good to very good overall with light even toning and a few scattered small darker toning spots consistent with age; the four binder holes in the blank left margin, are as made (hidable by framing). Noteworthy flaws of individual maps are as follows: Page 58/59 has some irregular toning, light offsetting and a creased top right corner. Page 62/63 has a creased top right corner. Page 70/71 has a small light smudge or two. Page 78/79 has some slight offsetting at top left (Medford area). There is some irregular toning and offsetting to page 82/83 (Malden) and page 98/99 (Quincy) has a rough bottom right edge with minor paper loss and short tears. Please refer to photos for a better assessment of condition.
