Description: DIRECTORY and REGISTER of WAKEFIELD, STONEHAM and READING, for 1890-91, with Business and Advertising Directories. By Dean Dudley. Printed and Published by Dudley Publishing Company, Publishers. Wakefield, Massachusetts, 1890. An Original Directory of every Resident and Business in Wakefield, Stoneham and Reading, Massachusetts.. Hardcovers, cloth covered spine and paper covered boards, 6x9 inches, 312 pages. Contains numerous advertisements of the day. These directories were published as advertising vehicles so ads are everywhere, including the covers. Contains 43 pages of really cool ads of the day. This volume was part of the amazing SUTRO GENEALOGICAL LIBRARY of SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. There is a Sutro shelving label on the spine, Sutro and related library stamps and marks on the endpapers, title page, and here and there throughout. The Sutro Library was (and to a large part still is) a treasure trove of genealogical books originally collected by Adolph Sutro and donated to the City of San Francisco. The collection was pretty much neglected by the City until, in 2012 the City gave the collection to the library of San Francisco State University. Before and after the move to SFSU quite a few volumes from the Sutro genealogical library were, sadly, deaccessioned so that the collection would fit it into its new space. In its new home at SFSU the Sutro Library is still considered to have the best genealogical collection west of Salt Lake City, and is now much better cared for, it's just not as large as it was. Once these wonderful deaccessioned Sutro genealogy books find new homes they will likely not be seen again for some time. FAIR CONDITION: The spine cloth is covered with clear tape, the front and rear boards are rubbed, scraped, and worn through at the edges, nonetheless these original covers are still doing their job. Internally, the front and rear inner hinges have split but have been repaired / reinforced with white cloth tape (the Sutro library was known for trying to keep their volumes original and complete), there are ex Sutro and related library stamps and marks as noted above; the last two pages, pages 311 and 312, are lacking but have been replaced with copy machine facsimiles to keep this volume complete; otherwise the pages remain bright, clean, and clear. An Original 1890-91 DIRECTORY of RESIDENTS and BUSINESSES of Wakefield, Stoneham and Reading, Massachusetts.. About the SUTRO LIBRARY (from where this book was deaccessioned): ******The Sutro Library holds the original collection of Adolph Sutro (1830–1898), California businessman and San Francisco mayor. The library has a large collection of publications and items dating from the 13th to the 21st centuries. It also has one of the largest genealogy collections in the U.S. Adolph Sutro's heirs donated his collection to the California State Library in 1913 with the requirement that the collection stay within the city of San Francisco. After operating in various locations in the city for almost 100 years, the Sutro Library moved to a permanent home at San Francisco State University in 2012.******
