Description: Map of Washington Co., Virginia, and Contiguous Territory Showing Mineral Resources, Agricultural Areas, Water-Powers, Railway Facilities, Roads, Streams, Educational Institutions, Names and Residences of Many Land-Owners, Post-Offices, &c. by C. R. Boyd, Geologist, and Alson Hutton, C.E., Philadelphia: J. L. Smith, 1890 Huge folding brightly hand-colored pocket map lithographed on four sheets joined to form two halves, each which is mounted to original brown blindstamped covers. Map dimensions: 60 x 40 inches (neatlines); scale: 1 mile per inch; topography in hachure relief. This map, prepared under the authority of the Board of Supervisors, is the largest and most detailed county map of that period from a southern state that I've ever seen. The long title reflects the ambitiousness of the map - it is literally packed with information concerning every aspect of county interest. Like Boyd's other regional maps of southwestern Virginia, the detailed geological and mineralogical resources of Washington County, Virginia, and portions of Tennessee, North Carolina, and West Virginia are shown. The map also contains a small inset map of Damascus drawn by Alson Hutton, CE. This map is a local historian's dream. Condition: Covers worn with backstrip mostly perished; fair only. Map is fragile and in need of restoration with splits at many fold intersections and along some folds. There is wear to exposed edges and corners (when folded) which has caused paper losses to some panel edges especially in the lower right corner portion of the map; image density is fortunately light in this area resulting in little information loss. Rare - WorldCat locates only 4 institutional copies. The map is not listed in Roberts and Bloomer's "Catalogue of Topographic and Geologic Maps of Virginia" which does include Boyd's similar but smaller maps of Wythe, Grayson and Smythe Counties.
