Description: Abbey dashed off this undated letter to "My dear Mr. Eaton," from his studio at the Judge Building in New York City to inform him that "The names of my guests are: T.L. Manson Esq. Jr. 325 Madison Avenue, C.W. Truslow Esq. 110 E. 57th St., Laurence Hutton 229 W. 34th St. I should like them placed next to me, and next to Mr. Chas Parsons if this can be arranged." He signs, "respectfully yours, Edwin A. Abbey." All friends and colleagues of Abbey's, and many of them artistic and literary luminaries in their own right, this group of men were all recorded on the back of Abbey's menu card as present at a banquet given in his honor in January of 1890 by Messrs. Harper & Brothers at the Union League Club - during the the same period when Abbey had his studio in the Judge Building - making it entirely likely that this seating request was for that banquet. Scrawled hastily on pages one and four of a sheet of plain white writing paper. Measures approximately 7" x 9" when unfolded. Edwin Austin Abbey (1852-1911) was a highly regarded illustrator, painter, and muralist. He is particularly well known for his illustrations of literary works such as Shakespeare, his official painting of the coronation of King Edward VII, and his murals at the Boston Public Library and the Pennsylvania Capitol. Condition: Fold lines, spots of mounting residue on page four, small water stain at the lower corners, later writing in red ink overtop of text, soil. The signature is large, clean, and easy to read. Generally in good condition, and a fun insider look at a nineteenth century social and cultural event. Shipping Notes: We ship same day via USPS upon receipt of payment before 3 PM.
