Description: Original Antique Mitchell Maps ca.1887 Minnesota, Dakota TerritoryandNebraska When Minnesota became a state in 1858, the leftover area between the Missouri River and Minnesota's western boundary fell unorganized. In 1861 this area (shown in the map) along with a large portion of Nebraska Territory was split off to create the organized incorporated territory of Dakota. The Territory of Dakota existed from March 2, 1861, until November 2, 1889, when the final extent of the reduced territory was split and admitted to the Union as the states of North and South Dakota. The smaller portions of the Nebraska Territory was transferred to Colorado Territory (1861) and Idaho Territory (1863) before the balance of the land became the State of Nebraska in 1867. The eastern section of Dakota ca.1887 shown in Map XV ceased to exist a few years later with the creation of the 39th and 40th states (North and South Dakota). Shown is the Sisseton Indian ReservationThe Reservation was created by treaty on April 22, 1867 and called the Flatiron Reservation, in reference to its triangular shape. It was created for the "friendly Dakota" from the Minnesota hostilities of 1862-1866. Signatories of the treaty were Gabriel Renville, John Otherday plus twenty-one other Sisseton and Wahpeton leaders. Gabriel Renville was the first Chief of the Reservation. The reservation is the homeland of the federally recognized Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, a branch of the Santee Dakota group of Native Americans. Most of the reservation covers what is now parts of five counties in northeastern South Dakota, while smaller parts are in two counties in southeastern North Dakota, United States. This was taken fromMitchell's Modern AtlasPublisherE.
