The area was established mainly by immigrants from Scandinavia and Western Europe who founded neighborhoods and communities along cultural lines, many of which exist to this day. Published during a period of considerable growth and development, this bird's eye perspective of Duluth depicts the city when large numbers of immigrants were flocking to the town for economic opportunities in iron and copper mining as well as the flourishing port, which provided a valuable resource for residents across the North and Midwest. The late nineteenth century saw the area expand and grow into a flourishing metropolitan area with Superior, WI. Produced and published by German-born artist and lithographer Henry Wellge, this bird's eye perspective bears a unique style and distinctive aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time. Bird's eye perspectives were among the most popular marketing materials to attract residents and merchants alike by featuring prominent civic features and economic opportunities. Wellge was among five cartographers who produced more than half of all of the panoramic maps found in the Library of Congress.
